Yes, the Rumors Are True

March 16, 2018

And the stories are flying already!  Let us help separate fact from fiction:

Why is Hames-The Homes People® moving? You’ve been an icon in Marion since 1969!

When our parents, Curt and Norma Hames, started this business 5 decades ago, most of our manufactured homes (called “mobile homes” or “trailers” back then) were sold new from our display center in Marion.  After purchase, the homes were moved nearby to “mobile home parks” or installed on private land.

Now, 90% of the homes we sell are already installed in Hames’ manufactured home communities – Grand View, Summit View, West Park, Sunrise Village and West Branch Village.  They’re pre-owned, completely refurbished, and already on site.  So, there’s no longer the need for a big sales lot.

Are you laying off any employees?

No!  All of our current employees are moving with us to southwest Cedar Rapids.  The demand for beautiful, affordable housing is as strong as ever.

Our sales, administrative, and service departments will be more efficient by being closer to our homes and customers.

Are you going to sell the company Hames Homes?

Again, no.  My siblings, Troy Hames and Cynthia Hames, and I love what we do.  We’re Eastern Iowa’s premier provider of manufactured housing and we plan on doing that for a long time.  Our third generation of Hames are joining us in the business and we hope to pass along the highly-respected brand someday.

What will happen with your old location?

We’re going to sell the current sales center.  The 4.7 acres is an excellent spot between 1st Avenue in Cedar Rapids and 7th Avenue in Marion.  It’s just a few feet to Lindale Mall and Highway 100.  We picture the property being used for retail or restaurants.

What about moving your warehouse/maintenance building?

There was a misconception that Hames was going to start manufacturing homes in a residential neighborhood.  In response, the Cedar Rapids Gazette explained in an article on February 28 that we’re just moving our parts and supplies warehouse to a corner of our property at 2800 West Post Road SW.

When will this change be made?

We’re hoping to break ground on the office remodel before the end of March, and move into our new space at 5410 Wabash St. SW before the end of the year.
